Question of the week: The Role of the Agri-Food Sector

Congrats! This will be the last post that you are expected that you will be graded on. Feel free to utilize the blog in your studies for exams. Your Link List to the left has also been updated .Here is your final Question of the Week:

many persons, yourself included, are simply unaware of where their food comes from. Agriculture and food systems involve many parts if not all of the overall economy. This is simply because food is a necessity. All living things must eat. And of course in order to create food agriculture is needed. All food no matter its form (i.e. manufactured, chemically produced/altered, processed. fast food etc) stems from an agricultural product. Take a quick look at this video series via the links below:

What are the key areas of the agri food system illustrated in this example?

  1. Looking at the three videos, we saw that there were different agricultural systems illustrated. From the first video there was an Irrigated farming system on Alvin Christian's Agritourism Farm. There were 30 different types of fruits grown on the first farm. Tourists as well as locals are able to tour the farm and sample the produce. On the second farm different crops were grown such as coconuts, citrus and vegetables. A dam provided water for the complete irrigation system on the farm.
The second video gave an example of a pastoral farming system taking place on the Hall's Family Farm. Persons were able to visit the farm and buy the animal that they want for their needs. We saw this happening when the chef visited the farm and bought the sheep that he wanted to prepare in the hotel.
Iton Henry's Farm was featured on the third video. This farm gave an illustration of intercropping. A wide variety of crops where grown on this one acre farm. This included the main stay lettuce and other vegetables such as peppers, cucumbers, seasonings and squash. The produce where picked and packaged on an orders basis which included no over nighting of the produce.

  2. After reviewing the three videos, it could be seen that the first video was a presentation of Alvin Christian’s Agritourism Farm. The farm is massive and there are over thirty varieties of fruits and vegetables such as coconuts, avocado and citrus. Their hope is that its North American and European visitors would have a taste of the Caribbean fruits so that when they are in the region they would be more desirous to consume products of the region over products coming from other parts of the world. The farm also introduces fruits from out of the region for example the “African Oil Palm”. There is a dam, an irrigated farming system which is used to irrigate the entire farm. In the second video shows an illustration of the Hall's Family Farm. They rear sheep for example the “Persian Blackheads” which are originally from Somalia; they use a pastoral farming system. Individuals are able to visit the farm and purchase these animals. This was seen as the chef visited the farm and bought the sheep which he used to prepare local delicacies in the hotel along with other various herbs, spices and fruits which develop on the island. Lastly the third video displays Iton Henry's Farm. Although it is approximately an acre of land, a wide variety of crops are grown for example vegetables, spices and herbs. His original goal was to plant lettuce but based on the customers demand grew other crops. He intercrops to save on space but his main crop is still lettuce which is of different varieties. Examples of the various crops are peppers, cucumbers, seasonings and squash. There is a packing house where vegetables are packed fresh every day. It should also be noted that all vegetables are picked to order and there is no overnighting. In conclusion the videos give a strong understanding on where our food comes from.

  3. Many people are unaware to where their food comes from. In these three videos give a view of how food is being produced and the different practices used and ways in which agriculture has evolved. The first video we see Alvin Christian’s agri- tourism project. This park is open to visitors which are welcomed to taste the fruits and vegetables which are produced on his farm, visitor are able to taste different produce from around the world as there are 30 different type. The land is generally large which accounts for the 30 different types of produce such as coconuts, avocados, fruits and vegetables. This type of Agriculture not only creates employment but is seen as a mean of tourist attraction. The irrigation system on the farm stems from a damn which as a result irrigates the entire land. The second video illustrates Pastoral farming as the Hall’s raise sheep and sell the meat to gain income. Visitors are welcomed on the farm to purchase these animals which are located on the Hall’s Family farm. As seen in the video a chef visits the farm the purchase a sheep in order to prepare a meal for his customers of a hotel. The third video illustrates Iton Henry’s salad farm. This farm is generally small and the method of farming is inter-cropping, this farm only produces vegetables which are used to make salads. The main idea of Iton was to produce lettuce on his farm but due to high demand on the market for other products he decided to plant other various crops on his small pastel of land such as cucumbers, peppers, lettuce etc. and by using the method of inter-cropping, but one of the main crops on his land is lettuce. There are high demands for Iton’s produce since they are picked and delivered on the same day, so produce are delivered fresh to its costumers.

  4. The videos promoted the acts of growing and producing of food locally for consumption. The first one featured a very large Agro-tourism farm project, owned by an Antiguan farmer, consisting of a variety of over thirty fruits and vegetables. It is done to attract people to consume Caribbean products rather than purchasing form abroad. The river dam located nearby is useful for irrigation purposes.
The second video featured an Antiguan restaurant with a chief who uses locally grown crops and reared animals to cook his signature meals. It is both cheaper and in full support of local produce, and is located not too far from the restaurant making it easily accessible for the chief.
The third video showed a small one acre farm owned by an Antiguan man named Iton Henry. It mainly consists of vegetables and involves the multi and inter-cropping farming systems. Farmer Henry engages in multi-cropping because of the high demand for variety in vegetables. The inter-cropping methodology assists in the shading of smaller crops from the harsh rays of the sun. Despite its small size, Henry’s farm has taken advantage of its massive potential by planting various types of lettuce amongst the other vegetables on the farm.

  5. Agriculture is, in the simplest of words, the procedure for changing the inputs into food. All living organisms need agriculture in order to grow and have the necessary nutritional attributes which prevent our bodies from diseases and most importantly malnutrition. In the above videos, agriculture can be seen as a main system to the livelihood of environmental impact with connections to inputs, agriculture, food, end users or (consumers) and other human activities. The dirt is fertilized and watered as needed. Plants produce, and they are tended to as needed. Food from the plants is produced as illustrated in the examples given and eaten by humans, or fed to livestock animals that are in the end eaten by human. Here we can discern that this is an acquainted series in our everyday hobbies as farming is vital, plainly because lacking it we humans cannot eat, or attain the given nutrients derived across these consumption methods.
Hence across this it is nearly clear to discern the key spans of farming food arrangements or systems that have been utilized in the preceding examples these include: feeding the population, production ( that involves both mono cropping, intercropping , varied cropping (raring of both livestock and crops), and multi cropping processing, packaging, and consumption. Because farming is such a vital contributor to everyday existence it is vital to retain pest and diseases and monitor the inputs to all the resources that farming draws on in order to succeed.

  6. After watching these three videos it shows that there were different agricultural systems illustrated in Alvin Christian's Agritourism Farm Irrigated farming system were used ,also a wide variety of fruits and vegetables where shown .in this farm visitors are welcome into the farm to see the different kinds of crops produce and to taste them. The second video shows Pastoral farming as the Hall’s Family Farm raise sheep and people buying the animals to consume them. In the video it shows that a restaurant chief uses locally grown vegetables and livestock’s to produce and create his dishes The last video it mainly consists of vegetables and involves the multi and inter-cropping farming systems because of the high demand for a wide variety in vegetables, operating on approximately an acre of land. The vegetables are not kept overnight because they are picked and delivered on the same day. These videos in conclusion shows that we can produce our own food in the Caribbean whether the land is small or large farmer produce a variety of crops and livestock’s and without farmers we would not have food to sustain us on a daily thus a farmer’s role is very important.

  7. Without Farming and Agriculture we cannot get any food and food is a necessity for survival. In some Caribbean territories, for example Antigua, shows the importance of agriculture in the various farms that they have. These farms provide a variety of crops and livestock, such as vegetables, fruits and meats which can all be made into a variety of tasty dishes. The key areas in the Agri-food sector systems illustrates that these farms are all well functioning successfully throughout the year and it is beneficial to the people as the demand for these healthy crops increases. The Agro-tourism farm in Antigua focuses on the historical background of the crops such as the Jamaican-akee, bananas, oranges and other citrus fruits, coconuts, plantains and other provisions and vegetables. Most of these crops were introduced into our Caribbean region, for example the African oil palm tree. This farm also has a complete irrigation system which irrigates the entire farm all through the year and it is beneficial for building the agricultural production of the farm. Other livestock/animal farms provide a large source of meat for example lamb, where it is used to make a variety of dishes. This farm is a monoculture farm because only goats are mined where they are all purely grass fed and monitored frequently to ensure that they stay healthy. However, some small scale farmers can also provide a wide variety of crops to markets where they cultivate only vegetables such as seasonings, squash, herbs, sweet peppers and lettuce on approximately one acre of land. This farm has a well organized system put in place, such as a small packing house for the crops. Conclusively, all of the farms have their own farming systems successively put in place, to provide a significant amount of crops all year round.

  8. The Video example was based on farmers and their farms in the country of Antigua. The various farmers practiced different types of farming systems each having its own advantage. The first farmer Alvin Christian had an Agro tourism Farm, his farm as he said in the beginning is for tourists/ foreigners and local to get a taste of the fruits of the Caribbean, this farmer practiced Multi- cropping, a variety of crops being planted in his one piece of land .The second farm, The Hall’s Family Farm was a livestock farm that reared sheep, this videos basically showed that the chef went to the farm, picked an animal of his choice and cooked it as he desired. The Third part of the video highlighted a farm that practiced inter- cropping where the main crop was lettuce.
In the Caribbean there are many farming techniques and ways in which food is produced, whether it is fruits, vegetables or meat. This video shows how the food is produced and reaches the consumers. Farms are used for different purposes and hence a system to suit that purpose is chosen, making the system both beneficial and advantageous to the farmer, allowing for successful managing of his farm.

  9. Agriculture, by definition is the business/ science of cultivating the land producing crops/ livestock for sale. This process is needed for food production as all living organisms need to eat. Most local (modern) farmers in the Caribbean are struggling form the competition of conventional agricultural farms that mass produce crops for sale internationally , but , have adopted a method refer to as sustainable agriculture which is seen in Mr. Alvin Christian’s farm. Sustainable agricultural farming general reduces the amount of labor a farmer does in maintenance of his far whish less labor is needed, less expense and more efficient system and cheaper produce, which would help promote and stimulate economic growth of local farmers and that of the country through increased local farmer support rather than preference of the competitive imported crops. As seen on Mr. Christian’s farm there are many as over 30 different varieties of fruit and vegetables which proved food locally and serves as a agro- tourism source to introduce local crops and livestock to a potential larger market. There was irrigation being practiced on his farm including polyculture. Irrigation was done to supply crops with water to maintain soil moisture and prevent soil consolidation and landscape. Also observed was the placement of citrus and coconut trees along the banks of the dam to prevent soil erosion. Crops indigenous to other Caribbean territories was also present in his farm such as the “Jamaican Oil Palm” and the “Akee” , a fruit that is a famous Jamaican dish. This would help with the tourism sector and food industry to citizens of St Vincent.
Mr. Hall’s farm supplies locals with livestock as seen in the video sheep was raised in a nearby pasture, which one of their lamb was brought by a locally working chef at St Vincent’s resort to include in his dish and also using local spices and herbs to garnish his creations, which complements the ingredients used native to the Caribbean and promotes local produce.
Mr. Inton Henry’s farm is generally of small scale but has a wide variety of crops some of which are used in spices and herbs such as “thyme”, used by locals in famously known dishes and crops such as “lettuce”, used in salads, as a typical appetizer by many restaurants. Farming techniques such as Multi-cropping is used to increase efficiency and also expense and as of such practice his farm land is never bare, due to year round production from a variety of different crops which bear at particular seasons which is organized in a way to have year- round production and constant supply of revenue maximizing use of the small 2 acres of farm land. Intercropping was also used by Mr. Henry as seen, “Sweet Peppers”, was planted on either side of the “Arugula” crop which was planted in the middle of the Sweet peppers which provide shade to the Arugula crop, in return maintains moisture content in soil
Wit given examples of Sustainable Agriculture practiced by local farmers in long term, would contribute greatly to the GDP and standard of living through circulation of money locally, to citizens of the country.

  10. From the videos, it was seen that each farmer utilized 3 different farming systems. In the first video, Mr. Alvin Christian farms thirty varieties of crops which mostly includes tree crops such as avacados, citrus, mangoes, coconuts and golden apple. He also farms some root and vegetable crops as well as bananas. He sources water for irrigation from a dam which is constructed on the farm. Mr.Christian's farm is geared towards agri-tourism which gives visitors a first hand experience of the various types of crops grown in Antigua and to give them a 'feel' and the scenery of a farm.
In the second video, Alex Grimley, executive chef at Carlisle Bay Resort took a journey to the Hall Family Farm to source local meat for his dish. The Hall Family Farm rears livestock, mainly the Persian Black Head sheep. This farm is an example of a pastoral farm whereby the animals are only fed grass.
The third part of the video takes a journey to Mr.Iton Henry's farm. Mr.Henry grows a wide variety of vegetables including seasonings, peppers, cucumbers, spinach, tomatoes, squash and his main crop, lettuce on his one acre parcel of land. He started growing only lettuce but later diversified because of the demand by local customers for other vegetables. Because of the small size of Mr.Henry's holding, he practices intercropping as well as multiple cropping. Mr.Henry is assisted by his sister in the packing house where the packaging of the farm's produce is done. Mr.Henry also uses drip irrigation in order to irrigate his crops. Since the sale of his crops are done by orders, there is no need to store his produce overnight.
After viewing all three videos, one can learn to appreciate where the foods that they consume comes from and also be able to identify the key areas of the agri food system.

  11. Alot of people are eating food today and they don't know the origin of these foods or where their food comes from. The videos shown gived us a clear understanding of the different practices used and where these foods have been originated from.
The firse video shows an agritourism farm owned by Mr.Christian. On the first farm he planted thirty different types of fruits including mangoes, pomcythere, african oil palms and so on. On the second farm he grew crops such as coconuts, citrus and vegetables. The main purpose of this farm is to encourage tourism in a way so that revenew will be coming into the country and not leaving it. He extracted some of these fruits from foreign such as the African oil palm which as the name suggest is from Africa originally. He constructed a dam in order to irrigate his crops and have them in good condition such as to promote tourism.
The second video was based on a pastoral farming system which is taking place in the Hall's family farm. They reared livestock mainly sheeps. The main variety they grew was the Persian blackhead which was originally from somalia. This farm also promoted tourism indirectly in that the chef came to the farm to obtain fresh locally produced lamb. He then used this to prepare local tasty dishes for people, mainly tourists in the hotel.
The third video was a video of Iton Henry's farm. He mainly grew vegetables and local seasoning and utalized intercropping to save on land space, because he had limited space to plant, on which was one acre. He planted peppers, vegetables lettuce being the main one , cucumbers, chive, thyme and squash. All produce grown on the farm was also packaged on the farm and this did not remain overnight. He had orders for his produce and since vegetables spoil quickly as soon as he harvested it he packaged it and send it off so that consumers are always getting fresh produce.
To conclude all of the above the videos gived us an understanding of our food sources and where it was originally from.

  12. After viewing of the three videos, there were different agricultural systems present. The first video showed Alvin Christian Agritourism Farm which was an irrigated farming system. Mr. Christian has a large farm in which he grows over 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables, and wishes and he wishes to give tourists a taste of the Caribbean region. A dam was constructed nearby to Mr. Christian’s farm which provides irrigation to provide water for the plants. Mr. Christian's farm serves to expose people to where their food comes from, especially that which are sustainable and also what is locally Caribbean.
The second video highlights the hall family farm, which supplies livestock that is raised on a pasture. Lamb is selected from the farm and is taken to a chef to prepare a dish very similar to a local goat curry, but in a more elegant and elevated way. This serves to promote the importance of using locally produced goods in general, and how it can help to create a sustainable farming industry. Local spices are also used and this reinforces the importance of using local, sustainable ingredients.
Mr iton henry's farm is on a small plot of land, only one acre but he manages to produce an impressive amount of vegetables on it. He takes us through various parts of the farm, showing some of his vegetables and emphasizing that he utilizes the technique of "intercropping" which is simply planting vegetables relatively close by. An example of this is the sweet peppers grown close to the arugula, and this does not only save space, but the larger sweet pepper plants serve to shade the smaller, more fragile arugula. This video shows the importance of small farms, and how it can be made practical and profitable through innovation. Local farming can be expanded tremendously if this concept is built upon, and if the government promotes the idea.
These videos show the importance of sustainable, local production and how it can be done is several ways, be it small or large scale, and also how important it is to support these ventures.

  13. On Mr Christians farm he produced a wide variety of fruit trees for tourism in the hope that foreigners when they are visiting they would eat the food that the Caribbean has to offer instead of eating their own food. However he is practicing multi cropping whereby he has more than one crop planted on the same piece of land. He also has his own irrigation system of a pond of over seventy thousand gallons of water. However he is encouraging economic growth to the Caribbean as he is trying to get foreigners to open up their taste buds to the delicious food that the Caribbean has to offer, in hope that they may want that same fruit back home where they came from an may decide to import it.
In the 2nd example on Halls family farm only livestock was reared on that parcel that parcel of land. There were no trees except a few to provide shade for the animals also they served not just the local market but also they could export to other parts of the world to help economic growth of the country. In the last example with Iton Henerys’ farm he practiced multi cropping as described earlier this is where he grew more than one crop on the same piece of land an since it was just an acre he also practiced intercropping whereby he had two types of plants growing on the same bed an one lent shade to the other.
Even though theses farmers produced food they only produced certain types of food which meant that they would have to buy anything else that they are not producing. This type of farming is commonly called subsistence farming where by the farmer produces enough food for his family and then the rest is exported. However it is important to note that in all three farming systems only livestock or crops were grown and not the both together at the same time which meant that within the Caribbean most farmers would just specialize in one area example livestock of crops. In the three examples the farmers would have been contributing to the GDP of the country in a small amount but it is still something.

  14. These three videos were very helpful in explaining not only where food comes from but the different methods used by farmers to successfully grow their food in Antigua. The first video takes us to Alvin Christian’s Farm. On his farm he allows visitors and tourist to come in and sample the fruits and vegetables that are grown in the Caribbean. It is his goal that by doing this foreigners would develop likeness for these fruits and vegetables and when they visit would prefer to consume these local produce instead of foreign crops. There are over 30 crops to choose from and they are watered using an irrigation system from the nearby dam. Additionally in the second video, we were taken to Hall’s Family Farm where they engage in a pastoral farming . The executive chef from Carlisle Bay Resort sources locally raised lamb to make one of his dishes. This simply shows that locally grown crops and animals can be used to make delicious dishes while supporting the locally famers and the economy. Last but not least, the third video showed an one acre farm owned by Henry . Even though the size of the farm was small Henry was able to use inter- cropping to facilitate the growing of his vegetables. He planted lettuce among other vegetables to maximise and use his land space wisely and meet the market’s demands for these crops.
In conclusion, these videos showcased the real lives’ of farmers in the Caribbean and the capabilities of farmers in the region to grow and rear our own food. Despite the size of the land and other factors, each farmer was able to use different methods they believe would yield the best results.

  15. The 3 videos show different farming practices on 3 different farms in the Caribbean. The first video shown profiled an agri-tourism farm operated by Alvin Christian. On this large estate farm, over 30 tropical fruit and vegetable crops are grown. The main purpose of this is to encourage locals to consumed local produce instead of foreign imported produce. Tourist from North America and Europe are invited to come and sample tropical produce. This way, tourists will be exposed to the diverse array of tasty fruits and vegetables and then be inclined to purchase these in the future. The second video profiled a farm run by the Hall family. Pastoral farming is the main practice. Individuals can purchase livestock directly from the farm. An example of this was given when a hotel worker purchased a sheep to create a dish with other locally grown herbs and produce. The third vidoe profiled a farm run by Iton henry. Intercropping is practised on this farm and crops such as sweet pepper, arugula and lettuce were planted close to each other to provide benefits such as shading of the seedlings. The 3 videos illustrate different farming tecniques and how raw produce and livestock reach from the farm to the dinner plate.

Each of the videos shows a different aspect as to how the food in Antigua is produced to be sold. In the first video, Mr Christian has large pieces of lands where he grows over thirty (30) varieties of fruits and vegetables. Some examples are: citrus fruits, soursop, plum, bananas and coconuts. His farm is not only geared to producing crops for the locals, he also channels into tourism, in that, tourists are encouraged to visit his farm to taste the fruits freshly picked. His objective is to convince the tourist to eat local produce when they’re in this region rather than eating what is imported from theirs. It was also seen that on his farm, that crops from other regions are grown, for example, oil palm. This shows that farmers are still attempting to diversify what they produce. His irrigation system is channeled from a dam nearby the farms. His farming is on a larger scale than Mr Henry’s in the third video. In the second video, Mr Grimley, the chef, is able to go right down the road from his hotel to buy lambs from a pastoral farm to use as meat in his kitchen. This shows that in Antigua, and probably in other Caribbean islands, some meats do not have to be imported. One can simply go to a farm and make an order thus supporting local farmers. And in the third and final video, Mr Henry produces several different vegetables on his one (1) acre of land. Some of his produce are herbs, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce and tomatoes. He uses intercropping to save space and does his own packaging right there on his farm. He can therefore supply fresh food to the local market. So it can be seen that though each video shows a different way of how or where we get food, each way is the starting point, whether it’s from a large farm, a small farm or a farm that focuses on livestock only.

  17. The agri-food sector has many roles. In this video example, there where three key areas of this sector. At the Alvin Christian agritourism farm in Antigua, there are over thirty varieties of fruit trees grown on the farm. A dam was built in 1994 and today it holds a capacity of seventy million gallons of water for irrigation of the entire farm. The goal of the farm is to attract tourists and to encourage them to appreciate the local Caribbean foods grown on the farm. Some of the plants grown there are, the African oil palm, a grafted mango tree, the tradional golden apple and trees such as citrus and banana grown alongside the river. Another key area is the use of agricultural produce such as livestock , for consumption. Alex Grimley, a chef, demonstrated the preparation of a delicacy of Braison lamb shoulder, potato gallet, with curried lamb cutlets and mango plantain chutney. The lamb used for this dish, was selected from amongst a herd of the Persian black heads, grown on the Hall family's farm. The third key area was shown from Iton Henry's farm. The fam is appeoximately two achres of land where he plants various varieties of seasonings of herbs, there were also different types of peppers, vegetables and lettuce such as Ice burge, romain lettuce and red leaf lettuce. He intercrops some crops, such as the sweet pepper and the rocket pepper. Therefore, from the video, three key areas of the agricultural food sector were observed from three different farms .

  18. Alvin Christian is an agri-tourism developer and farmer whom target the agri-tourism sector as his main income earner. He specializes in over (30) thirty types of fruit including sour sop , guava, ackee and those enhanced using horticultural techniques such as grafting and budding (mangoes ,Ortanique and Shaddock) to increase crop productivity. These crops are produced to meet the foreign market both American and European demand and satisfy consumers taste and preference while supplying it on a yearly bases as in the case of dwarf coconuts .In order to meet these demands and high productivity rate; a dam is used to supply water for the irrigation of the crops . As such Alvin aim is to produce quality crops that target consumers from all over no matter their geographic location.
Hall Family owns a livestock farm which specializes in sheep’s originated from Somolia that is purchased by Alex Grimley an executive chef of Calisle Bay Resort to prepare for consumption by individuals. Before it can be sold to consumers it undergoes many processes by the chef which includes; Selection of animal from the field, slaughter, Cleaning, size reduction (cutting /chopping), sorting and packaging /seasoning. The meat which is seasoning is then made into different dishes which can be purchased by the public thus generating income to Calisle Bay Resort.
Iton Henry is a farmer whom specializes in local agriculture and produces a wide variety of vegetables. He began his farm 2 ½ years ago practicing mono -culture of lettuce on 1 acre of land but subsequently changed to mixed cropping as the demand shifted towards different crops. He uses ground beds to plant different types of crops such as peppers, lettuce, tomatoes and seasonings or herbs in rows and intercrop to maximize space. A drip irrigation system is used on the farm as well to irrigate the crops. The vegetables are harvested everyday during maturity stage and transported to the packing house where they undergo proper phyto -sanitary measures and are packaged properly to by transport various places.

  19. Agriculture is essential as all animals require consumable food in order to survive, humans have over time improved their farming techniques in such that they are more profitable, productive and appealing. in the examples shown in the videos, it shows different methods and techniques used by farmers in Antigua. Video number one takes us to Alvin Christian’s fruit farm where he provides agro-tourism and also produces over 30 different crop produce on his farm. Also on his farm he employs an irrigation system to water his plants with water from a nearby source. Adrian Christian is trying to encourage visitors and tourists to consume locally produced fruits and vegetables via allowing them to sample his produce. In video number two, we see Hall’s family farm, here we observe pastoral farming where one can get fresh, local meat and one can even choose their own animal, as seen. In video three, we see Henry’s small one acre farm where he maximizes available space by employing intercropping techniques where he cultivates lettuce beneath other crops whereby producing a number of crops on a limited plot of land and maximizing available land. These practices encourage the local market, strengthening local economies and local agriculture and adding to food security.

  20. The food that we consume all came from an agricultural product. The video from an agricultural product. The videos showed different types agricultural systems that are sources of food. The first video was about Agritourism where the different fruits of the Caribbean were grown, such as grapefruits, soursops plums etc. Tourists visited the farm where they had an opportunity to taste the varieties of fruits found in the region, this would encourage the preference to eat products from the region.
The second video was a family local meat farm here lamb were reared for the purpose of food production. The third video indicated a garden being cultivated on one acre of land and intercropping was practiced due to the lack of land. The crops grown were herbs which are used in seasoning meats , tomatoes, spinach and different varieties of lettuce which are used in salads. This farm also had a packaging system to add value to the produce. All of the methods of agricultural practice ensures food security by ensuring the availability of food for the population

  21. Sustainable agriculture has offered economically viable opportunities for farmers, policymakers and many others in the entire food system. This three part series showcases three different agri food systems in Antigua. All maximizing their uses of locally grown produce and promoting their local farms.
The first part of the series followed a farmer who has an agro tourism farm where he grows a larger number of citrus fruits, vegetables, coconuts and sour sup tress to name a few. He utilizes a nearby dam which was constructed to form an irrigation system for the farm. His attempts are to show locals that their fruits and vegetables are second to none and compatible to the foreign produce. He also showcases the local and Caribbean indigenous fruits to tourist. E.g. Jamaica Oil Palm and Akee.
Part two carries you to a chief’s resort where he shows us where his delicious meats ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬are obtained. A nearby farm, rearing live stocks which he selects the lambs to be cooked with local species and herbs. This is then severed in the resort for tourist. This allows foreigners to get a good taste the local produce the island has and also allows the foreign market to appreciate what they have to offer.
The final trip was to a local small scale farmer’s land where the owner explained the type of farming he practices to ensure a sustainable production. He talks about the multi-cropping practices he maintains to keep up with the local demands. He also does inter-cropping of larger plants among the small fragile plant so they can get both shade and helps slow down the respiration process. He occupies 1 acre of farming land but makes the most of it to supply the growing local demand.

  22. The Video examples presented were based upon farms in Antigua, each containing food systems. A food system is used to describe all the activities involved in producing, processing, transporting, storing, selling and eating food. In the first video the Alvin Christian farm was highlighted. This farm is an Agro-tourism farm which is open to visitors to see the variety of Caribbean fruits and vegetables. This farm focuses on multiple cropping productions of fruits and vegetables which is the growing of more than one crop at the same time. In the second video an executive chef sourced locally raised lamb from a farm by the name of, Halls Family Farm. This farm focuses on the area of production, rearing of livestock for sale to be consumed. The executive chef bought the lamb for it to be later cooked for consumption. The key areas in this food system were production to processing to consumption. The last video is a farm known as the Iton farm, this farm focuses on growing vegetables simultaneously in the same area also known as intercropping to save space since the farm is small. The main features of the Iton Farm food system are production and packaging of the vegetables for sale.
In concluding, it can be noted that all the farms have production as a common feature since most farms grow crops and rear livestock. However there are some differences in other areas of the food system .If a food system is properly executed then it can be used to maintain order from producer to consumer.

  23. The agricultural food system comprises of processes such as growing, harvesting, packaging, transporting, marketing and consumption. In each of the three videos key ideas of the agricultural food system were observed. Adrian Christian is the owner of an agro-tourism project. He farms on two large expanses of land producing mainly citrus crops that are unique to the Caribbean. His main focus is clearly on the tourism sector since he stressed that his aim is to have individuals from Non-Caribbean countries to come, experience, and enjoy our Caribbean agricultural flavour, and hopefully fall in love with what we grow and eat which will consequently boost the general economy. On one of his farms he uses an irrigation system that is fed by a dam constructed specifically for this purpose. This can be seen as a major input into his project. Mr Iton Henry is a local agricultural farmer. He is a small scale farmer, farming on one acre of land. He has been able to maximise his productivity by using intercropping methods to meet the local demand and utilize the maximum available space. In addition to maximizing the use of his resources, Iton operates his farm on an order basis where customers order the produce and are supplied with freshly picked, packaged products. This largely reduces the likelihood of spoilage and the need to invest in preservation technology. The video with Alex Grimley in contrast to the two previously mentioned, basically shows the outcome of the processing of an agricultural product.

  25. The examples viewed illustrated various methods of sustainable agriculture where a number of cultural practices were utilized to produce local and healthy foods.
The Alvin Christian Agritourism Farm depicts clearly a multiple cropping system[1] on a large area of farm land; a wide variety of crops were planted together. I noticed also specific arrays of permanent(tree) crops utilized on the farm. This will not only make work easier in terms of crop husbandry and reduced monitoring, but also lend itself to a year round supply of fruit varieties in changing seasons.
Agritourism involves touring agricultural areas and participating in many of the farm activities[2]. It aids in educating foreigners of the locally available fruits/produce and their unique tastes and encourages them to purchase locally instead of having supermarkets/vendors import fruits that they know. This may aid the locals’ appreciation of their home-grown crops and can reduce imports.
Other cultural practices were the year round supply of water(irrigation) from the man-made dam, and the cultivation of tree-crops alongside its banks for preservation of soil structure(reduced erosion).
The Hall Family Farm adapted the pastoral[3] method of farming where the land is used for grazing sheep. This type of animal husbandry encourages the known hotels/restaurants to purchase locally. Businesses/consumers can view the environment(sanitation) where animals are reared, and also avoid the chemical processing and freezing/thawing the imported meat may endure.
Iton Henry Farm, mono-cropping was first introduced then an incorporation of multiple cropping[1] and inter-cropping[4] systems. Drip irrigation, temporary seedbeds and intensive monitoring/care of the vegetable cash crops were obvious. The latter two systems help to utilize small land areas and control pests/diseases as crops can be rotated. The produce were then freshly packaged and shipped out within the day.
In conclusion, sustainable agriculture, if pursued intensively by a country, may in the long-run, increase the surplus, reduce imports, increase exports and increase the overall GDP of that country.

  26. Many people are simply unaware of where our food comes from. Agriculture and food systems involve many parts if not all of the overall economy. This is simply because food is a necessity. All food no matter its form (i.e. manufactured, chemically produced/altered, processed, fast food, etc) stems from an agricultural product.
From the three videos shown, it not only gives a good explanation of where our food comes from but also the different methods farmers use to successfully grow their crops in Antigua.
The first video gives us an insight about Alvin Christian's Farm in which he turned into an agri-tourism project to facilitate visitors and tourists from America and Europe into the farm to sample the fruits and vegetables that are grown in the Caribbean. There they have put together a collection of thirty various fruits and vegetables on the farm such as sour sop, mangoes, coconuts, citrus, avocados, etc and constructed a dam to provide water for the plants irrigation system. Christian's main intention was to expose tourists to a diverse amount of fruits and vegetables so that they would eventually have a greater desire to consume products from the Caribbean region.
In video two, it took us to a local farm run by the Hall Family. It highlights pastoral farming where they raised sheep, particularly the Persian blackhead and then sold them to gain an income. An example was given where a local chef, Alex Grimley went to source some meat to make a dish and also used local spices and herbs to garnish his meal which complemented the ingredients used natively in the Caribbean.
In video three, it highlighted Iton Henry's Farm which was generally of small scale but had a variety of crops, some of which were used in spices and herbs such as thyme and chives, and crops such as lettuce used in salads as a typical appetizer by many restaurants. In his farm, inter cropping was used to save space since his crop was not that big and so the sweet peppers lend some shade to the arugula crop which was planted in the middle of the sweet peppers and in return helped to maintain moisture content in the soil. They also had package houses where they packed the vegetables first everyday, to order since there were no overnighting.
In conclusion, these three videos gave us a clear understanding of our food sources and where it originally comes from.

  27. The program illustrates three separate ideas of agriculture. The first section of the program deals with the agri-tourism sector whereby Alvin Christian grows produce for the promotion of the county’s agriculture. From the video, it can be noted that Mr. Christian possesses a vast amount of land and consists of many different types of fruits and vegetables; he incorporates agricultural techniques such as grafting and budding into his farm. These produce are geared towards a foreign market and seek to engage foreign visitors in the taste of locally grown fruits and vegetables. Trenching of the dam to increase size also shows the investment towards the development of the irrigation system for the entire farm to ensure proper irrigation.
In the second portion of the video, the different levels of production are exemplified, whereby raw materials are used to produce goods and services for the consumer. The lamb is reared on a livestock farm which is another form of agriculture and is bought by the chef and made into an end product.
The final scene displays a much smaller farm, roughly an acre and is relatively a new farm. This farm grows crops such as seasonings and vegetables for sale in local markets. The producers and consumers are closely linked in this type of farming therefore crops are grown based on consumer demand for fresh and different types of produce daily. In order to increase his variety and meet demands Mr. Iton has introduced inter-cropping into his skill set.

  28. The first video introduced us to Alvin Christian’s Agrotourisim Farm, which is split into two large area, one with mainly fruit trees and other Caribbean favourites such as Soursoup and Avacado, the farm is located in the highlands. The sister farm on which he mainly grows vegetables also contains a man-made damn which holds enough water to irrigate the fields and sustain the farm, this farm is located on lower terrain. The main objective of his farms is for Agritourisim where he hopes to target North American and European visitors, he gives these visitors a taste of our local fruits and vegetables to hopefully open their markets to export the crops.
The Second video shows us the Hall’s Family Farm, a pastoral system where animals are raised on an organic diet (grass fed) which makes it attractive to consumers. Highlighted was a local chef selecting the animal he wants to prepare his gourmet dish. Used in the dish are local products to attract taste of foreigners as well as making it totally local and Caribbean as possible.
The third video shows a smaller type of farm owned by Iton Henry. This farm started of as a monocrop (lettuce) farm which he sold to local consumers however there was also demand for other types of crops. Even though the area was small he intercropped other types of crops into the lettuce while still maintaining the main crop. Although small in size the farm concentrates on fresh produce as no crops are stored overnight in the packaging house, it uses a “ready to go” approach to sales which is attractive as consumers are certain their items are fresh.

  29. The agriculture food system consists mainly of harvesting, packaging etc. but most of all catering to the public needs. In these examples we saw these steps of the food system taking place. These videos focused on the different farming practices those farmers in Antigua use. Two farmers were highlighted with different practices and one chief which showed the outcome of agriculture. The first farmer had two large pieces of land which he grew different crops on. His main focus was on tourism. He wanted tourist to experience different crops from different regions. He grew the ackee fruit that is most popular in Jamaica, mangoes and other fruits that would attract tourist. This farmer had a damp which helped to irrigate his farm lands. The second farmer was very different from the first farmer. He had a different way of farming. This farmer famed on only one arc of land. He started off first mono cropping only lettuce, but then realise that there was a higher demand for other crops. So he started inter cropping growing things like cucumbers, sweet peppers, hot peppers, seasoning plants ect. He would be considered a small scale farmer compared to the first farmer. He farms so that he can survive in the economy as well as to provide for himself. The chief I think showed how agriculture is important because the chief used a lot of local ingredients which in turns helps agriculture business. This would mean less importation of goods if local people support local agriculture.

  30. In the first video, Mr. Alvin Christian farms thirty varieties of crops which mostly includes tree crops such as avocados, citrus, coconuts and golden apple. He also farms some root and vegetable crops as well as bananas. He sources water for irrigation from a dam which is constructed on the farm. Mr. Christian's farm is geared towards agri-tourism which gives visitors a first hand experience of the various types of crops grown in Antigua and to give them a 'feel' and the scenery of a farm.
The Hall Family owns a livestock farm which focuses in sheep’s originated from Somolia that are purchased by Alex Grimley an executive chef of Calisle Bay Resort. This farm is an example of a pastoral farm whereby the animals are only fed grass.
The third video was a video of Iton Henry's farm. He mainly grew vegetables and local seasoning and utilized intercropping to save on land space, because he had restricted space to plant, on which was one acre. He planted peppers, vegetables lettuce being the main one , cucumbers, chive, thyme and squash. All produce grown on the farm was also packaged on the farm and did not remain overnight. He had orders for his produce and since vegetables spoil quickly as soon as he harvested it he packaged it and sent it off so that consumers are always getting fresh produce.

  31. Agriculture is a key economic driver. It is the science of farming including cultivation of the soil for the growth of crops and the rearing of livestock to provide food and products. It provides nutrition, fibre and mineralogy for plants. The contributing elements of the videos demonstrate how the cycle of local agriculture in the Caribbean is utilized daily and the conversion of raw materials to products. In the First video, Mr. Alvin Christian’s Agritourism Farm illustrates over thirty varieties of fruits such as African Oil palm, Jamaican Ackee, coconuts, avocado, bananas and other citrus fruits including grafted species. A 10 million gallon dam is present for irrigation of the entire farm. The second part of the video, shows how a local sheep (Black head Persian) is produced from agriculture (livestock) and prepared into an edible dish. In addition he utilizes herbs and chutney (from mango) that are in season in its preparation. The farmer and chef both contribute to the process of the finished product. The third video of Mr. Iton Henry’s Farm shows a diversity of crops such as lettuce, banana sweet peppers, spinach and herbs, etc. He exercises intercropping, such that spinach plants are intercropped with rocket crops to provide shade and utilize space. A small package house is facilitated where fresh fruits are packaged and sold daily. He operates on a small acre of land however, is very successful. Consumer demand contributes to the variety of crops produced. Consumers contribute to the agriculture sector and the ability of the market’s demand to increase or decrease. In Conclusion, agriculture involves a contribution from all factors in the economy to be successful. Without land, farmers, and consumers along the way to convert our food into edible sources, there would be no success.

  32. Food is vital to human survival. All food no matter if it is processed or in its raw form comes from agriculture. Hence agriculture is vital to human survival. There are many different types of agricultural practices. These videos focus on different types of agricultural practices in Antigua.
The first video is a video based on an agro-tourism farm. This was Christian’s Agro-tourism farm. This farm practiced multicropping which consisted of over 30 fruit and vegetable crops. The farm allows both tourists and locals to sample the fruits on the farm. This is in hopes that the tourists will prefer the taste of fruits from the region over other so when buying they would buy fruits from that region. A nearby dam provides for irrigation of the crops.
The second video showed an example of Pastoral farming at the Hall’s family farm. They focused on livestock farming particularly sheep rearing. People are invited to come to the farm and purchase the livestock for their personal needs.
The third farm was Iton Henry’s farm. This demonstrated intercropping. Here a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and spices are grown on approximately one acre of land. The main crop is lettuce but the land is intercropped to utilize the little space.
In conclusion there are many different farming methods. Some may be sustainable methods and some may generate lots of profits. Each type of farming practice has its own advantages. It is important for agricultural production whether it is small scale or large scale since food is vital to the survival of individuals.

  33. It can vividly be seen that in the first video which was based on Alvin Christian’s farm. It was very large with many different varieties of fruits and vegetables. The farm consisted of the African Oil Palm which was not originally from their continent also other fruits such as coconuts citrus’s (grapefruit, oranges,) banana and avocado are present as well. Also they had a fruit by the name of akee. There is a dam which consists of approximately 70 million gallons used to irrigate the entire farm.
In the second video shows the halls family farm which comprises of only animals more importantly the blackhead sheep, the animal is fed on strictly grass. A local chef by the name of Alex Grimley came on Mr Hall’s farm and chose one of the blackhead sheep in which he was to later use in a gourmet dish. The ingredients used in this dish are all locally produced fruits an vegetables. Which goes to show that the Caribbean is capable of creating lovely blend of food from its given resources instead of importing.
The third video is based on Iton Henry’s Farm which is approximately one acre and comprises of a wide variety of plants such as seasoning and herbs, cucumbers, banana peppers, sweet peppers and lettuce. He uses a technique of multiple cropping as well as inter-cropping, though he may not have had alot of land he is maximizing the one acre of land to its full potential which is exceptionally well done.
We can see that our Caribbean’s agriculture can be used for on the market, to export and to food companies. Agriculture is very important to our Caribbean economy as it can greatly affect our overall GDP as well as our standard of living once it is managed in a very efficient manner.

  34. Tho people might not know where their food comes from, food is a necessity and will be consumed. all food comes from an agricultural product and thus food and agriculture is connected to many parts of the economy in all countries. The videos show seek to provide us with different examples of where fod comes from as well as examples of different farming methods of used by farmers.
Mr. Christian, in the first video showsd us an example of mustiple cropping. He had multiple crops on the same large area of farm land. He also had some tree crops which would suit him as they would provide him with produce all year round suiting his agritourism business. he sought to introduce foreigners to the local fruits. It is also important to note the man made damn what was built for the year round supply of water.
The Hall Family Farm adapted the pastoral method of farming. The land in this case is used for grazing sheep. The sheep here are organic and local shefs are enocouraged to purchase as the meat does not have to endure the freezing and packaging and long transporting that inported meats would have to.
The third farm showd intercropping that came as a result of demand for different crops after the owner started with a monocrop. This farm specialises is fresh produce as no crop is stored overnight and crops are harvested everyday at the point of maturity.

  35. Many are of the view that “everything that is imported is better”, however, these three videos clearly suggests otherwise. In most Caribbean countries, economic wellbeing is either solely, or greatly dependent on agriculture. All food that is consumed, whether processed or natural was in its first stage, some form of agricultural produce. Mr. Alvin Christian owns an Agritourism Farm in Antigua where he uses two separate plots of land to cultivate a variety of fruits, and the other to cultivate various vegetables. On the fruit farm, approximately thirty different types of fruit trees are grown, some year round and some seasonal like the golden apple, this allows for yields to be gained year round so that when a particular fruit is not in season, the other varieties can keep yields flowing. Mr. Christian also practises grafting, where two varieties of fruits are merged to create a new species of fruit. This was done with oranges and tangerines to create a new species of citrus fruit. A dam was constructed back in 1994 for the irrigation of the trees and now holds approximately seventy million gallons of water. This is convenient for Mr. Christian and somewhat essential for the fruit trees which require much more water than smaller crops. On the Hall Family Farm, the Persian Black Head sheep are reared and sold, even to local restaurants. These sheep are purely grass feed which is better than the imported lamb, that in most cases are given steroids and other chemicals to enhance their growth.Unlike Mr. Christian, the video showed that Mr. Iton Henry used the trickle irrigation system instead of building a dam, due to his different circumstances. Firstly, Mr. Henry cultivated seasoning, cucumbers, sweet, hot and seasoning peppers, various types of lettuce, tomatoes, and squash, all of which are smaller in size when compared to Mr. Christian’s fruit trees, thus requiring less water. Additionally, Mr. Iton only had access to approximately one acre of land, and because of this, he practised intercropping to save space which was beneficial to “rocket” crops as it was shaded by the sweet pepper plant. A lot of benefits are derived by local agriculture such as food security and employment opportunites, which is why great efforts should be made to conserve and development agriculture in the Caribbean.

  36. In the videos, different types of farming can be seen. In the first farm owned by Alvin Christian, mixed cropping is present. This is a large farm which was turned into and agro tourism project. It contains a wide variety of fruits and vegetables with over 30 different fruits on the farm. These fruits are highly competitive other fruits from all over the world. The trees are grafted for more efficient production of fruits. The fruits are larger and sometimes more tasty. A large dam was created to provide water for the irrigation system on the farm.
The second farm which is the halls farm raises different types of sheep. Chefs of local hotels go to this farm to choose which lamb they want and purchase it then carry it to the slaughter house then to the hotel’s kitchen to prepare meals. This ensures that guest’s meals are prepared with the finest choice of the lamb and very lean good quality meat since these sheep are fed grass only.
The third farm is a small farm approximately one acre owned by Iton Henry. Mixed cropping is also practiced on this farm and because it is small the farmer engages in intercropping to save space. On this farm, to ensure that customers get fresh products, the fruits and vegetables are picked as they are ordered.

  37. The agricultural sector plays a major role in Caribbean society, as many households and businesses depend on local farms to supply them with meats and agricultural produce throughout their daily routines.
In the first video, Alvin Christian’s Agri-tourism Farm is enormous and separated into two sections with a dam containing more than seventy million gallons of water that provides the entire farm with an effective irrigation system. Within the farm, there are over thirty varieties of food growing on the farm, which also includes fruits from outside the Caribbean region, to as far as Africa, which is featured in Alvin’s farm as the “African Oil Palm”. Some examples of the fruits growing on Alvin’s farm are coconuts, avocadoes, citrus, vegetables and Jamaican ackee.
The second video featured a local chef who owned a hotel and purchases locally reared animals and locally grown fruits from a nearby farm in the region to cook his delicious dishes and meals which are served at his restaurant. The local farm featured in this video is a farm which specializes in animal rearing, featuring lambs from Somalia known as “Persian Black Head Lamb”.
The third video featured a small scale farmer called Iton Henry, who is the owner of his one acre farm that specializes in growing vegetables of all types, such as lettuce, seasonings, herbs, peppers, spinach, tomatoes and more. The vegetables that are grown on his farm are eaten in almost all West-Indian homes on a daily basis and are a fundamental part of our food culture. An important factor noted about Iton Henry’s farm was that he possessed a packing house, where he packs his vegetables fresh every day, resulting in no overnighting, giving people high quality vegetables for their money.
From the three videos provided, one can gain appreciation for the foods and animals they consume daily and gaining knowledge as to where these foods come from.

  38. Alvin Christian’s farm was a massive farm which he converted into an agro – tourism farm. This type of farming brings awareness to the local community by showing that a farmer can create other avenues for business by becoming a little environmentally sensitive. The tourists also garner a greater appreciation of the local fruits. With this it is hoped that they will buy local while staying in Antigua. This agro – tourism food system reduces the impact of erosion since logwood along with vegetables and fruit trees are planted which hold the soil together. Alvin Christian farm also has a dam which was constructed in 1994 with profits made from the farm. The farm is completely irrigated by water from this dam. The farm has efficiency in that all of its resources are used to improve the farm’s capital; its crops.
Alex Grimly who is an executive chef in Antigua prepared a dish using locally sourced meat. His dish was a spin from the normal Caribbean goat curry dish by using locally sourced meat. This shows that Caribbean cuisine can diversify. This diversification will help create a high standard that meets the demand for tourists.
Iton Henry’s farm shows the effectiveness of a suitable agro - food system in that he gets maximum yield in the crops grown. He has only one acre but grows a variety of crops such as spinach, banana peppers and cabbages. He practices mixed and relay cropping. This causes reduction in erosion, nutrient enrichment and provides shade for the smaller plants. He also has a packing house. This video shows that he’s making good use out of his acre of land.
These agricultural food systems are used to provide food stability and as a further benefit financial stability for the farmer as well. According to Food and Agricultural Organization, 1996 “all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.”

  39. After viewing the three videos, one would note the three different agricultural systems illustrated. The first video is a presentation of Alvin Christian's agri-tourism farm/project, which boasts over thirty varieties of fruits, such as coconuts, avocados, citrus and enables visitors to sample the fruits that are produced on this farm. The irrigation system on this farm emanates from a damm resulting in the entire land being irrigated.
The second video illustrates the Hall's Family Farm, who rear sheep such as the 'Persian Blackheads' which are native to Somalia. They implement a Pastoral farming method. Individuals are able to visit the farm and purchase these animals. As seen in the video, a chef visits the farm and purchases the meat to prepare a meal for his customers at a hotel.
The third and final shows Iton Henry's salad farm. The farm is small and produces vegetables which are used to make salads. It is relatively small and uses a method of inter-cropping. Iton's main intention was to produce lettuce alone on his farm, but due to the increasing demand for other vegetables, he decided to plant other vegetables. Iton's produce is on high demand due to it being picked daily and delivered to his customers fresh.

  40. The farm methods displayed were that of extensive and intensive, while the agricultural practices displayed in these videos were agritourism, inter cropping, vegetable production, orchard, livestock production and different irrigation methods used. One of the extensive farmers is an agritoursim farmer whereby he has his farm for cultivation and tourist purposes as he earns money in both sectors of the economy as local plants and none regional crops of different varieties are cultivated. Practices such as inter cropping was done by the cultivation of sweet pepper, cumber and squash. Irrigation by dam; a river was used to water the entire farm. This farmer also has genetically alter crops as different varieties of produced can be seen. A small scale famer only produced lettuce but due to demand he stated cultivating other crops. Also drip irrigation was displayed. Intercropping was also done on this small farm due to a lack of space. On the livestock side of farming, extensive sheep farming practices was observed. The basis of all food found worldwide stems from agriculture or farm establishment. There are many ways of obtaining live stock or crop produce but they are all derived from some form of agricultural practice.

  41. This video showed the growing and production of crops and livestock locally in three different aspects. The first video showed shows an agritourism farm which grows a variety of local crops such as mangoes, golden apples and many more. The aim of agritourism is to popularize local crops among tourist so that they can appreciate the various crops that are produced locally. Another important aspect of agriculture is the raring of livestock. It is understood that millions of people consume meat daily which means there will be a supply for meat by farmers. It is important to understand the necessary precautions that are important when dealing with the preparations of meat. In the second video a chef goes through a process of preparing a Persian black for consumption. We see that all the necessary precautions were taken dealing with the animal. The third video showed a farm which grew mostly seasoning and herbs on a acre of land such as peppers and vegetables. A perfect example of intercropping was shown in this video where the farmer grew both sweet peppers and rocket peppers alongside each other. In these videos
three aspects of agriculture were shown from three different farms.

  42. All three video clips dealt with the trading and marketing of agricultural produce and animal husbandry. The videos essentially presented ways in which agriculture as a foundation industry can be linked (marketed) with other economic activities.
Alvin Christian Agri-Tourism farm has thirty variety of fruits in which North American and European visitors can have a taste of fruits and vegetables grown in the Caribbean. His farm is used to attract foreigners/tourists to explore the variety and different varieties of produce grown locally which are not grown in other parts of the world. He is marketing his produce (through tourism) which he may later on export to other countries.
Executive Chef at Carlisle Bay Resort is cooking a local cuisine of locally sourced meat (lamb) where the dish is slow roasted rack of lamb and potato gillet with a Caribbean twist. At the Hall family farm, a pastoral farming system is used. The sheep were purely grass fed -which many consumers would prefer- and the Chef picked out himself; a Persian black head originally from Somalia to make his dish. Here the Chef is doing a trade and marketing his skills while creating different dishes/cuisines unique to the country, using locally grown herbs and spices to attract the taste of many at the hotel.
Iton Henry’s one acre vegetable farm consisted mainly of lettuce, but also different vegetable crops such as cucumbers, sweet peppers, herbs and seasonings etc. are also grown and sold to local customers who demanded different types of produce. His farm demonstrated intercropping with an irrigation system. Vegetables are packaged fresh to order, every day for customers and are not store overnight in cold storage which makes it a plus for him and consumers. Here Mr. Iton does marketing in agricultural produce to attract customer locally.
Agriculture can therefore be rewarding and linked to several areas of an economy.

  44. The Agri Food System is made up various components which is vital for food production. The primary component is the production of tree crops such as citrus and mango which is mainly used for making juices and flavoring of food. Other crops in the component are: bananas, plantain and yams. These crops are a major part of the Caribbean diet. Over the years, efforts have been made to increase the production in order to meet the demand of these crops, such as irrigation, dwarf varieties which reduce the limitation of seasons and high breed varieties which produce much larger volumes and sizes of fruits. The secondary component of the agri food system is livestock production; it complements the primary system by production meat which is our main source of protein in the Caribbean. New breeds of animals have been imported into the Caribbean to improve the current stock and in order to obtain a breed that has the qualities which is desired by the consumers. The tertiary component is vegetable production which plays a vital role in the agri system. Crops such as chive and celery are used for seasoning of the various meats which produced in livestock production, and are used to cook various dishes with provision and other crops. They are also used for garnishing dishes. The main use of vegetables is to provide us with the various minerals needed; hence farmers produce a wide variety of vegetables and are sometimes forced to intercrop because of the diverse demand which the consumers require. All the various parts of the agri food system have an important role to play, hence contributing to a wholesome Caribbean meal.

  45. Farmers Alvin Christian, Iton Henry and Hall family and their farms were featured on the Food and Drink Television (FDTV) Farming and Agriculture in Antigua series 1, the 3 farms shown had distinctive farming systems. It informed the public who seen the series where there food comes from.
A Farmer Alvin Christian farm is a visionary as he does not just to earn revenue. His farm is an example of Agritourism which aim is to not only to let tourist to experience where the local food comes from but also taste a wide variety of fruits, he hopes for them to consume produces of the region while in the region instead of imported food which there are accustom to. If successful it could be implemented to solve part of the tourist based economies within the Caribbean who import cost is quite high such as Barbados and also raise the employment levels.
Christian’s farm has different varieties of fruits (30) and vegetables (Multiple cropping). This technique makes effective use of inputs such as soil, water, fertilizer and output per unit area increases with many returns to the growers. His farm is quite large as it has a ‘sister site’ which is mainly vegetables, with some citrus, avocado and coconuts. A 70 million gallons dam is used to irrigate the crops.
Hall family’s farm only reared livestock and he fed purely grass according to Chief Carlise. It was notice there was a few trees and grass on a hilly landscape. The chief form a nearby resort was going to cook the lamb he selected from the farm to create a twist of the Caribbean dish.
The last farm was a micro-farm as it operated on an acre of land. Intercropping was adopted according to Henrgy to meet the wants of the consumers. It saved space and the taller crops shade other crops. One advantage to this method is it lessens the impact of crop failure and helps with pest management. Irrigation is handled by sprinklers. Crops are harvested, washed and packaged by orders and never stay overnight.

  46. People are aware of the fact that in order to sustain life, food is one of the key factors needed along with water. However, many people take for granted where this food comes from. These videos showcased different agricultural practices used to grow crops. Agriculture is one of our primary sources of producing food.
In the first video we saw the Agro tourism farm owned by Alvin Christian (Agri tourism developer and farmer). E has an irrigation farm system. He grows a collection of fruits and vegetables and grows over 30 varieties of fruits. He grows crops such as oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, golden apple and ackee. He has a complete irrigation system. The water is supplied by a dam that was built in 1994 that held a capacity of 10mil gallons of water. It was expanded twice and currently holds 30mil gallons. Mr. Christian wishes for people to taste and learn about these crops. His crops have a constant supply of water. The main purpose of this farm is to encourage tourism.
In the second video showed and executive chef at Carlo Bay Resort named Alex Grimley. He gets his local source of meat from Hall Valley Farm in Valley Road, Antigua. The farm is near so it is easily accessible. The farm rears sheep such as the Black Head Persian. The animals are purely grazed fed (extensive farming system). Even the animals which are utilized, utilize the crops. It is like a cycle. The chef also utilizes the local crops in his dishes as seasoning for flavor and even as decoration. He used herbs and mangoes.
In the third video showed the farm of Iton Henry. He grew a wide variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, herbs (thyme and chives), hot and sweet peppers and squash. He started this farm about 2 ½ years ago. He originally wanted to start with lettuce but there was demand for larger varieties of crops. He intercrops to save space which is growing two or more crops in proximity. An example is the sweet pepper which grows near to the arugula and shades it. He also has a packaging house in which he packs fresh vegetables every day (no overnigting).
We can see that agriculture produces different sources of food and that both food and agriculture plays important roles in our economy. It also shows the importance of local and small farms in the Caribbean.

  47. It is true that today, the origination of food is often unknown, meaning society is unaware of how it is created.
There are many different farm types for example, as seen in Alvin Christian’s farm. The land is massive and up to thirty crops are grown simultaneously, including, “coconuts, avocados and fruits and vegetables.” Alvin encourages Agritourism upon his farm meaning that he encourages foreigners to visit his land in the hopes that they will be enlightened to Caribbean fruit. These crops are grown through a massive irrigation system as there is a damn nearby that contributes to the farms success.
The second video shows a smaller scale farm, known as the Halls family farm. They use monoculture livestock farming where animals, preferably the Persian Blackhead Sheep. This farm allows the onsite purchasing of animals so that they can reduce the cost of a “middle man” and head straight to the consumer.
The third video is a clear display of inter cropping as Iton Henry uses a very small piece of land to facilitate his crops. He uses crops of a similar make up and theme so that they can all thrive under the same conditions, Iton grows many types of lettuce and cucumber etc. this is helpful as uses different crops helps prevent the breeding of pests and diseases.

  48. These three videos are very helpful in explaining the key areas of the agricultural food systems in Antigua. The first video we were taken to Alvin Christian agritourism farm which he plants different varieties of fruits from different parts of the world and region in a small scale. This type of farming is called multi-cropping, in this farm he allows foreigners to experience these products locally instead of consuming foreign products which would boost the local market and economy. The farm is irrigated by a man-made dam that can hold 40 million gallons of water.
In the second video we were introduced to the Hall family whom locally rear livestock mainly the Persian black head sheep which is an example of pastoral farming. Alex Grimley, the executive chief of Carlisle Bay Resort uses these local livestock to make his lam rack recipe in turn this will help the local economy and provide an income for the farmers.
In the last video, we were taken to Iton Henry Farm where he started producing lettuce but because of high demand for other crops he began producing cucumbers, peppers (sweet and hot) and seasons such as thyme just to name a few. Iton method of cropping is intercropping mainly due to the land size which is one acre hence it would save him space. This farm has a well-organized system put in place, such as a small packing house for the crops. Iton Henry farm is an example of a small scale farmer.
In conclusion, these videos showcased the real lives of farmers in the Caribbean and who helps the economy by producing locally. Despite the size of the land and other factors, each farmer was able to use different methods they believe to get the best result.

  49. Food is an absolute necessity for survival and agriculture is the main source of food, without the production of crops and livestock it would be impossible to obtain food. The videos showed portrayed the different types of agricultural practices in Antigua.
The first video focus on Christian’s large scale farming which was turned into an agro-tourism project. On this farm there were over 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables. And also there was a dam holding 70million gallons of water. The farm allows for touring for both tourists and locals accompanied with the opportunity to sample fruits directly from the tree itself. This however is done as a marketing tactic to promote the fruits so that country could invest in the particular fruit of vegetable and will therefore improve the economy of the country.
The second video showed the Halls family pastoral farm in which the livestock were fed pure grass. This main focus of this farm was the rearing of sheep. Buyers have the liberty to come directly to the farm to choose their preferable sheep for buying.
Iton Henry’s farm was the third farm in which inter cropping was displayed. This farm was one acre in seize and had a variety of plants such as herbs seasoning, cucumbers, bananas, peppers and lettuce. The crops were inter cropped as a measure to maximize the use of the land.
Each type farming has its own pros and cons. In the end it was essential for the well being of each and everyone and also contributes to the economy of the country.

  50. From watching all three videos it was seen that in the first video at Mr. Alvin Christian’s Agritourism farm there were thirty varieties of crops, most of them being fruits. Some of these crops were African oil palm, golden apples, Jamaican ackee, coconuts, avocado, bananas and citrus fruits. There was also a dam in order for irrigation of the crops. The reason for this farm was so that tourists and locals will be able to sample the fruits and vegetables that Mr. Christian provided on his farm and buy from that region when they wanted.
From viewing the second video it was seen that on the Hall’s Family Farm there was the rearing of sheep. The breed of this sheep is Black Head Persian and on this farm it is used to be produced into a dish. On this farm the sheep is only fed grass and the type of farming is call pastoral farming.
On the third video it was shown that on Mr. Iton Henry’s Farm this was an example of intercropping. There was a variety of vegetables, herbs and spices such as bananas, lettuce and sweet peppers. The reason for this way of farming is to utilize space as his farm is only 1 acre large.
In conclusion, no matter what type of farming that is done, each has its own advantages as did Mr. Christian’s farm with his tourism, Mr. Hall’s farm with pastoral farming and Mr. Henry’s farm with intercropping. These farmers benefited from their ways of farming and so do the consumers. Without the farmers, we the consumers would have nothing to eat and no food to survive on unless we try to provide it for ourselves.

  51. Many people do not know how the food they consume is produced. The common man does not know of the many methods used to produce food that is demanded in the region. There is also a lack of knowledge of the various unique crops and livestock that are available for our consumption, as well as agriculture's role in diversification of the economy and linkages to other industries like tourism. The three videos aimed to show the various methods used to produce food and the importance of native and locally grown food to the Caribbean. The first video showed the farm of Alvin Christian a local Antiguan farm which caters for foreign visitors as well as locals. It aims to encourage foreigners to consume the local produce available. It also shows the wide range of crops available whether it may be local ,foreign as well as hybrid. There are multiple crops like citrus , mangoes, ackee and bananas and exotic crops like golden apple found there. The farm also uses various systems to produce its products mainly irrigation based farming. The second video was also based in Antigua. It showed a sheep livestock farm owned by the Hall family. The farm utilized Persian blackhead sheep which were adapted to local conditions. These sheep were grown in a pastoral system and were grass fed. Locals are able to buy sheep and visit the farm and observe conditions the sheep were reared in .The provided meat for a local a restaurant owner who was able to use it in his dishes. The quality of the sheep was comparable to foreign standards. The third video showed a small/cash crop farmer who utilised a small piece of land in Antigua. He began with one crop lettuce then grew multiple crops and practiced intercropping. He had high demand locally and made efficient use of his small piece of land. The caribbean now practices massive importation of goods especially for visitors. the goods may be cheaper to import however foreign crops and meats tend to be more dangerous due to use of excessive chemicals. Local produce grown in the caribbean tends to be organic and safer for consumption. The quality is also comparable or even greater than international standards. The wide range of local crops reflect our culture and should be promoted away and home. The agricultural industry links with other industries for e.g tourism in Antigua and helps with the overall economy. These videos showed that the systems practiced in the caribbean are best suited too us and beneficial to producers and consumers. 52. After watching the three videos, each video illustrated a different type of farming .The first video shown was based on an irrigated farming system in Alvin Christian’s Agritourism farm. Irrigated farming system is the artificial application of water to the land or soil. In this farm, there were a variety of fruit and vegetable crops such as coconuts and citrus fruits where visitors of the farm can sample. The second video displayed an example of a pastoral farming system on the Hall’s family farm. This is mainly farming aimed at producing livestock rather than growing crops. In the video It was shown where a chef came and bought a lamb to make a dish for the hotel he works in. on the third video shows Iton Henry’s salad farm. Because of the small space which is about a archer, Iton Henry has to grow his crops, he uses the intercropping method. This is where two or more crops are grown together. In this farm he uses the sweet pepper trees which help to shade the arugula from the full blast of the sun. It was originally a lettuce farm, but because of high demands of other crops, it eventually developed a wide variety of vegetable such as seasoning, herds, cucumbers, sweet peppers, hot peppers, tomatoes and squash.

  54. After watching the first video and Alvin Christian’s Agritourism farm, it makes one grateful that there are persons who are passionate about agriculture, but more importantly, passionate about promoting local produce in the world’s market. His main goal or his hope was for foreign visitors to be able to sample local fruits so they could eventually develop a desire to consume fruits of the region on a more regular basis. Farmer Christian practices multi-cropping, where varieties from different parts of the region are grown. Over 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables are grown and of these comprise of ackee which is native to Jamaica, avocados, citrus, bananas, plantains, shaddock, golden apple and ochro. He illustrated interest in advancement and biological technology through the grafting of 2 varieties of mangoes to produce a new variety and also through sound conservation techniques when he implemented intercropping.

Hall’s Family Farm practices animal husbandry where they rear Persian Black Head sheep which are originally from Somalia. Individuals, mainly buyers, are allowed to visit the farm and handpick the sheep that they want to purchase, for example Alex Grimly to make the signature dishes such as the Gullet with, Mango Plantain Chutney. It was also observed that hall’s farm practices pastoral farming.

Iton Henry is also is local farmer in Antigua, but when compared to the other two farms, practices agriculture on a smaller scale. On his one acre farm, Farmer Henry grows a wide variety of vegetables and seasonings such as lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, squash, chives, thyme and banana peppers. He initially started as a monocropper with lettuce, but diversified as consumer demand for the various other vegetables increased. He also intercrops sweet peppers and arugula firstly because sweet pepper trees lend shade to the arugula and secondly because they are able to give and take nutrients to each other. It is shown that he believes in giving his consumers fresh produce as all produce is picked, packed and delivered to his buyers on the same day. Not only do all three videos show us where our food comes from, but it also presses for increased pride in our local produce.

  55. Food is always needed to sustain life, and food originates from farms, such as Alvin Christian and Iton Henry’s respective farms. Key areas to be considered in the agri food system are the size of your farm, the type of crops or livestock to supply to the market, the customer’s demands and the time it takes to establish your farm. These key areas were all illustrated in the video examples of Alvin and Iton’s farms.
Alvin had a large space of land to practice agriculture whereas Iton only had one acre. So Alvin was able grow more varieties of vegetables and fruits on his farm. He also used his farm as a means of tourism, to appeal to foreigners. Iton on the other hand has a small piece of land to work with but still supplies to the local market. He focuses on mainly vegetables, such as peppers, and due to this small piece of land (one acre) he practices intensive farming and intercropping to maximize his yields. This is done to meet the demands of the public.
As seen in the video examples, farms can not only bring in income, but also used to supply a full meal for the day, for example the lamb and fruits from the local farms used to make a tasty lunch. Agriculture plays a vital role in this modern society as it produces all food products and many people fail to notice this. This is why agriculture is neglected. By watching these video examples and learning more about agri food systems, you gain a more appreciation for agriculture.

  56. Alivin Christian’s farms consists of an area for various fruits from around the Caribbean(akee, grapefruits, soursop, ect) and another for vegetable. The farm is use for Agro-tourism and allows foreigners to taste the various fruits from across the Caribbean; this is to encourage an interest for the local produce and therefore increasing the local market when they are in the Caribbean and increase chances for exporting to potential markets.
The second clip shows the Hall family with a livestock farm. There is sufficient land for the livestock to grazing animals which are better than those imported because of the processes they go through.
Iton Henry farm is 1acre and produces a wide variety of vegetables such as seasoning/herbs, cucumbers peppers and lettuce. This intercropping technique was due to the area of land available to Mr Henry in order to save space and also there was a demand for different types of vegetables so this technique would have proven most effective and profitable.

  57. In the Caribbean one of the most critical health problem is related to food and nutrition. From the FDTV series videos entitled Farming and Agriculture in Antigua, there were different types of agriculture food systems illustrated. Firstly, in the first video, Alvin Christian's Agri-tourism Farm practiced the irrigation farming system. In which there were tree crops such as avocados, golden apples, citrus and coconuts to name a few.Further there were thirty different types of fruits grown.
Further the second video illustrated a pastoral farming system in which farming is based on producing livestock. I
This type of farming system is also common in countries such as Argentina, Australia, Ireland, Britain and New Zealand just to name a few. Furthermore the third video there was inter cropping, the farmer was cultivating on one acre of land,he began mono cropping only lettuce, but then realized that there was a higher demand for other crops. So he started inter cropping growing such as cucumbers, sweet peppers, hot peppers, seasoning plants ect.

  58. Three types of Farming practices were seen the three videos Food and Drink Television Farming and Agriculture in Antigua. The three practices shown were Agro- tourism farming, Pastoral Farming and Micro Farming.
The first farmer on the Agro- tourism farm used his farm mainly to educate tourist about local fruits and to encourage tourism. Vegetables were on display through a wide variety as well as over 30 Caribbean fruits such as the Jamaican ackee, grapefruit, guavas and plums. He had an irrigation system were the water supply to his farm came from a dam which was built next to the farm that has a holding capacity of 30 million gallons of water.
The second video showed Chef Alex Grimley and how he attains his meat for the Restaurant locally from Hall Valley farm. An Extensive Farming system is used here as animals from this farm are purely grazed fed. The chef also uses local herbs and seasons from this farm.
The third video is a Micro- Farm where the farming scale is very small and inter cropping is seen. The farmer started two and a half years ago as a lettuce farm but demand for variety was high so to meet the demands of locals and well as to work with the small scale inter cropping was introduced. A wide variety of vegetables are grown mostly herbs. The farmer has displayed some pest management practices amongst his inter cropping where the arugula is shown growing between the sweet peppers who give shade. Packaging of fresh vegetables is done daily In the farmers packing house to distribute locally.
These three videos showed the importance of Local farms on a small and a large scale along with the usage of farms and the different farming methods that can be used from the island of Antigua.

  60. The three videos showed Antigua’s food and agriculture.
Video one was based on Alvin Christian agri tourism project. On his farm he grows over thirty varieties of fruits. Examples of these fruits that were seen are oranges, bananas, grapefruits, plums and many more. The video also showed that Mr. Christian graft some of his mango trees so that he is able to get a better quality mangoes. He has a constant supply of water which he gets from the dam in the lower plains. This dam helps him to irrigate his large farm. The main purpose of his farm is to provide a wide variety of fruits to tourist that comes in Antigua.

Video two mainly showed how Alex Crimley the Executive Chef at Carlisle Bay Resort sources some locally raised lamb to cook braised lamb shoulder potato gallet with curried lamb cutlets and mango plantain chutney from start to finish. The lamb (Black Head Persian) was taken from Hall Family Farm; on this farm extensive farming practice was quite dominant. This video mostly showed how livestock are processed and altered until they are edible.
Video three was primarily based on Henry's salad vegetable farm. On this farm there is a large variety of vegetables such as peppers lettuce chives thymes and much more. Due to the demand of a wider variety of crops from customers, Mr. Henry decided to practice intercropping to save space as well as grow more crops. Mr. Henry also showed how the crops are harvested and packed for customers.

  61. The key areas of the agri food system illustrated in the videos ranges from production in the Caribbean on the various farms to the conversion of the local produce into “food on the plate”.
In the first video Mr. Alvin Christian’s an Agritourism Farmer displays over thirty varieties of fruits on his farm such as Ackee, Avocado, African Oil Palm, Bananas, Soursop, Guava and other Citrus fruits including grafted species like Mangoes, Ortanique and Shaddock to tourist. Mr. Christian's goal is to expose tourists to the diverse types of fruits and vegetables available in the Caribbean so they would want to consume products from the region. This creates and develops an American and European market. Because of the varieties he plants and the size and organization of the farm e.g. a 10 million gallon dam for irrigation of the entire farm, is would be able to satisfy consumers demand year round both locally and for exports.
The second video shows a local farm run by the Hall Family who produces Black head Persian sheep that are raised on grass via grazing. A lamb is selected and purchase by the head chef Mr. Alex Grimley from a local hotel to be prepared and served as part of their menu. Mr. Grimley utilizes local herbs, spices (curry), Mango and Plantain to make chutney to serve the lamb in his preparation. This is a fine example of the chain of events leading to “food on the plate” or where food comes from where the produce produced by the farmer is then bought by the chef and prepared into a meal, both contributing to the process of the finished product all done local leading to sustainability.
The third video showcases Mr. Iton Henry’s Farm where a variety of crops such as Sweet peppers, Spinach, Lettuce, Banana and Herbs are grown on a small parcel of land, (small scale farming). His farm is consumer demand driven. He practices intercropping as consumers wanted more than Lettuce which is started off with. He also has a small package house where the fresh produce are packaged and sold daily.
The videos show the key areas of the agricultural sector which also is the foundation of the other sectors creating jobs and contributing to the economy.

  62. After looking at the three videos, there were different types of agriculture systems illustrated. The first video showed an Agri-tourism Farm owned by Alvin Christian which was an irrigated farming system. The farm compromised of multiple cropping products which means that multiple fruit and vegetable crops were being harvested at the same time. There are over 30 different types of fruits and vegetables being grown and the farm was open to the public so that they could tour the farm while also sampling the produce. The irrigation system compromised of a nearby dam which is able to provide water to the large are of land.
The second video shows Pastoral farming as the Hall’s Family Farm raise sheep and then people buy the animals to consume them. In the video it shows that there is a restaurant chief who uses locally grown vegetables and livestock’s to produce and create his dishes.
The last video is a farm known as the Iton farm. This farm focuses on growing vegetables simultaneously in the same area which is also known as intercropping to save space since the farm is a small one. The main features of the Iton Farm food system are the production and packaging of the vegetables for sale.
In conclusion the three videos show the different types of agricultural structures an how they are used to benefit the individuals or the economy on a whole.

  63. Food is a very important factor in the world.Every living thing needs food for survival. Mr. Alvin Christian’s shows us his farm in Antigua. it contains multiple crops such as citrous and cash crops. This farming system called mixed cropping is mainly used in his farm. this is to reduce pests and diseases, or to have harvesting of different crops regular. A dam provides water for his farm due to his location.
In the second video, Hall’s Family Farm shows us a different way and type of farming. This is the rearing of livestock. Sheep is being reared on this farm and is used for cooking. Meat provides a high source of protein and helps in a balanced diet. the sheep reared is called the Black Head Persian and is reared for meat and not milk.
in the third video, Mr. Iton Henry’s Farm shows variation in crops in a method call inter-cropping. This system can be used to keep pests under control, can be used to utilize land space causing more production on a smaller piece of land. Cash crops such as lettuce were planted, bananas were also cultivated this is a mixture of long term and short term cropping which keeps revenue coming into the farm which can den help in the development of the farm
The Caribbean is one of the largest food producers as a unit, but a growing population means that there will and is an increase in food demands and soon these farms shown may not be able to provide for everyone. Factors such as technology needs to be increase to maximise production.

The Video examples presented were based upon farms in Antigua, containing food systems. The first farm was owned by Alvin Christian, a farmer. His farm is an Argo-tourism farm that has thirty different varieties of fruits and vegetables found in different parts of the Caribbean. He practiced multiple cropping. This not only brings tourist to explore and taste but to also give an entire Caribbean experience.By doing this,he receives an income from the tours and when he sells his produce. He uses tourism to market his produce which can later with proper managing become a large export avenue. At the Hall Family farm, there was mainly the rearing of livestock. However the animals ,lamb, were fed pure grass. When animals are reared with inorganic material there are many side effects to it so organic material should be used and was correctly used. The farm sells locally for cooking. Rearing for sale.Lastly, there was Iton Henry farm. This farm size was only one acre and can be viewed as small scale. There was mono cropping practiced first using lettuce but was shifted to inter-cropping with crops such as cucumbers, sweet peppers, herbs and seasoning. This type of farming helped reduced soil degradation, pests and diseases. Using a dam he also had an irrigation system in place.Mr Iton also packed fresh produce everyday according to orders and never stored or chilled his produce. This form of farming was seen as subsistence.

  65. In the videos, it can be seen that Antigua has a lot to offer in terms of agriculture and agritourism. In the first video, Alvin Christian Agritourism Farm, in Bengals, the owner Alvin Christian stated that ‘the farm comprises of over 30 variety of fruits’, fruits such as grapefruits that the tourists can be seen eating, plum, soursop and even ackee which is part of Jamaica’s popular dish ‘ackee and saltfish’ and many other fruits. Alvin’s farm is made up of local, regional and international fruits, which is irrigated by a man-made dam. The second video shows the process of a sheep from the Hall’s Family Farm to the plates at Carlisle Bay Resort.
The third farm, Iton Henry’s Farm was mainly intended to grow various types of lettuce of which he has such as Romain, Red leaf and Ice Berg. Customers demand for other types of vegetables grew causing him to diversify and intercrop with crops like seasonings, sweet, hot and seasoning peppers, spinach and cucumbers which allowed him to save space and some plants gave shade to others. Hence, in these videos inter-cropping and mixed cropping is taking place.
Conclusively, the key areas of the agri-food system illustrated in the example will be technological systems the farms use for the irrigation of the crops like the pipes in-between the rows and the man-made dam. The food distribution is another area, in the case of Iton Henry it is packaged at the farm by order authorizing no ‘middleman’ which allows him to have direct relationships with his customers causing trust and first preference to develop for future transactions.

  66. After viewing of the three videos, it can be clearly seen that there were different agricultural systems present which explained not only where food came from but the different agricultural methods that were used by the farmers in Antigua. In the first video shown, there was an irrigated farming system called Alvin Christian Agritourism farm. The park is open to tourists who are welcomed to taste the fruits and vegetables produced on his farm. In this farm he grows 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables such as coconut, avocados, mangoes, pomcytheres etc. The second video is based on the Hall’s family farm which focuses mainly on farming and they rear mostly sheep, commonly Persian blackhead which was originally from Somalia. This video basically showed that the chef would pick a sheep of his choice and cooked local tasty dishes for people, mainly for tourists in hotels. By doing this, it indirectly promoted tourism and to a small extent, the country’s GDP. The third video is based on a small one acre farm that practiced inter-cropping, where lettuce was the main crop and also multi-cropping. Iton Henry, the farm owner, engaged in multicropping because of the high demand for variety in vegetables, whereas the inter-cropping method, assisted in the shading of smaller crops so as to prevent the harsh sun rays from hitting it. In conclusion, the main idea of these three videos, is to provide a sense of understanding as to where our food sources derived.

  67. As stated food is a basic necessity and is important for survival. The videos demonstrated ways in which crops (vegetables and fruits) and livestock were grown are reared respectively.
The first video showed that Alvin Christian vegetable farm which is a huge farm. Many tourist visits his farm as part of their sight seeing. Alvin informed that there is a variety of over 30 fruits. Alvin uses the system of multiple cropping which is growing crops on the same piece of land. Some of the vegetables and fruits that Alvin planted were mangoes, citrus (oranges, grapefruit, and tangerine), avocado, coconut and traditional golden apple. Also Alvin uses a complete irrigation system by taking water from a nearby dam. Alvin suggested that the public could visit the farm at any time to sample and enjoy the produce.
The second video is based on a chef, Alex Grimley in Carlisle Bay Resort who uses meat from a local farm to prepare his dishes. Alex showed us a different type of farming which is the rearing of livestock. The Hall family farm was involved in pastoral farming (which is rearing livestock rather than crops). Alex visited Hall Family farm in Antigua where he used a black head Persian sheep for his dish. Mr. Grimley also uses local spices, mangoes and plantain to make his chutney.
The third video showed Iton Henry farm in which he grew a wide variety of vegetables such as seasoning, herbs, cucumbers, hot pepper, lettuce, tomatoes and squash. Mr Henry showed the different types of seasoning such as thyme and chives which is used to season meat, fish. The farm was started by Mr. Henry approximately 2 years ago and is about an acre. His main objective was to start off with lettuce but the demand for other vegetables increase. Mr. Henry used inter-cropping on his farm to save space because his plant was not big. All Mr. Henry vegetables were picked for orders and there were not any leftovers. He picked the vegetables straight from his farm and had them packaged by his assistant. The main vegetable on the farm was lettuce. The types of lettuce he planted were Ice berg, Romain and Red leaf.
In conclusion it can be stated that vegetables, fruits and livestock were grown and reared in different ways. The videos also showed ways of sustainable local production and how important it is to support local production because it can contribute to an increase in GDP.

  68. The three videos provided are about how food is produced, the practices used to produce them and the ways in which agriculture has evolved; the different methods and techniques used in Antigua. After examining the first video of Alvin Christian’s agri- tourism farm which is two large expanses of land, it is revealed that his multiple-cropping farm is open to tourists to see his locally grown fruits and vegetables and this is done to promote his farm so that the foreign people can see that local produce is not inferior. In addition, the desire to consume locally grown fruits and vegetables will increase which will lead to a rise in exportation in countries throughout the world (his direct target is the North American and European people). Moreover, it is noted that he utilizes water from a nearby dam which he created a complete and successful irrigation system. The second video demonstrates the Hall’s family farm. They practice pastoral farming or as we know it animal husbandry where they rear sheep. Buyers are allowed to visit the farm and handpick the animal they desire to purchase. Alex Grimley (a chef), visited the Hall’s farm, there he selected a Persian Black Head Sheep which he used to prepare a local dish for tourist; this, indirectly promoted tourism for the country. The third video is of Mr. Iton Henry’s small-scale agricultural farm. Mr. Henry farms on one acre of land and in order to satisfy the local demand and maximize his small space, he utilizes the intercropping strategy. He operates his farm by order, that is, buyers order what they want while he provides them with freshly picked produce; this conversely reduces the risk of spoilage. In conclusion, all three videos show sustainable local production.

  69. The three videos viewed illustrated various systems of farming and how our food is produced. It instills a sense of appreciation of where our food comes from, which in most cases is taken for granted.
The first video shows an agrotourism farm belonging to farmer Alvin Christian where he grows a variety of crops and vegetables such as mangoes, golden apples, oranges and others. The crops on this farm are irrigated by a large nearby dam. This farm aims to better inform tourists of where food is produced and to encourage them to consume locally grown crops which in turn can reduce import costs.
The second video shows the Halls family farm which is smaller in size and raises livestock which is then sold for consumption. In this video the the Black Head Persian sheep is reared and prepared for consumption using other crops as seasoning and flavor. This was done by the executive chief Alex Grimley and much precaution was taken in doing so.
The third farm belonged to Iton Henry and in this farm intercropping was displayed where two or more crops are grown together. This method was used in order to maximise land use considering the farm was only 1 acre in size. A variety of vegetables, herbs, spices, bananas and peppers were grown. His business is efficient as his produce is picked, packaged and reaches his customers on the same day.
In conclusion, after viewing viewing the three videos one can now develop a greater appreciation for local produce and agriculture in general. Also, people are now aware of where their food comes from.

  70. Many people are unaware of where the food they eat daily comes from and these three videos attempts to illustrate the different ways that agricultural practices contribute to what we have on our plates.
The first video was about Alvin Christian’s Agri-tourism Farm. On this farm many different regional fruits and vegetable are harvested, also fruits outside of the region for example the African oil palm. These fruits and vegetable include mangos, citrus fruits, ochre and much more. Alvin Christian the owner of the farm allows tourist to take a tour of the farm, in hopes that they develop a taste for it so that the demand for the fruits grown on his farm increase and local market is increased. On this farm there is also a damn which allows the entire farm to be completely irrigated, this is useful to reduce cost of production as well as labour input.
The second video takes us to Carlisle Bay Resort where Chef Alex Grimley takes us to the Hall Family Farm. On this farm this they raise livestock, one of the animal which they rear is the Persian Blackhead Sheep which is originally from Somalia. On this farm, customers are allowed to visit and hand pick the sheep of their choice to purchase. After Chef Alex purchases the sheep he carries it back to the resort where he prepared several local dishes using the sheep meat and local herbs and spices.
The third video is on Iton Farm where he grows vegetables, herbs and seasoning on 1 acre of land. He uses trickle irrigation to water the plants which allows him to effective use his water resources. During the video he explains that he first intended to grow just lettuce but decided to practice intercropping because the demand in local markets grew.

  71. The three key areas of the agri-food system illustrated in this example are input, production and marketing. Alvin Christian’s Agri-tourism farm places emphasis on producing vegetables and tropical crops which are traditionally grown in the Caribbean region such as mangoes, citrus, coconuts and other popular fruits such as soursop, shaddock and golden apple. Mr. Christian has invested considerably in the construction and then expansion of a damn which provides water for the farm. He has wisely chosen to market his farm as an agri-tourism enterprise as he is able to not only earn an income from selling his produce but also influence the future demand for local produce by educating tourist on tropical fruit and vegetables. This will in turn put pressure on hotel and restaurants to meet their customers’ demands.
The second part of the video showed the importance of value added in the agri food system. Alex Grimley, a chef of the Carlisle Bay Resort demonstrated that locally reared livestock such as the Persian Black Head lamb can be deliciously prepared and served in fine dining restaurants. An additional bonus is that the lamb are grass fed in pastures which is a healthy alternative to factory farmed lamb. The breeding stock of lamb is imported from Somalia.
The third part of the video highlighted the one acre farm of Iton Henry. Although Mr. Henry’s farm is considerably smaller than Alvin Christian’s farm, the space is well utilized and intercropping maximizes the land usage. Mr. Henry was wise to respond to the demands of the market by diversifying from lettuce production to other salad greens, peppers, tomatoes and herbs. The vegetables are picked to order and this gives Mr. Henry’s vegetables the advantage of being fresher and truly from farm to table. I enjoyed viewing these videos as they opened my eyes to the enterprising and entrepreneurial spirit of our Caribbean people.
